New sensory nooks open at Yorkshire Rose College

Students at Yorkshire Rose College in Doncaster have officially opened their new sensory spaces ahead of the summer break.

The Sensory Nook Pods, funded by a £10,000 grant from The Crescent Purchasing Consortium (CPC), provide structured, safe and accessible places that support students with communication needs and SEND.

Tracey Jamison, principal of Yorkshire Rose College, said: “Our students were thrilled to open the new pods and are excited to be able to use them when they return to college in September.

“They provide calm, low-stimulus environments that will enable them to regulate sensory input, manage anxiety, and engage with learning in an inclusive way. We are extremely grateful for this grant from CPC.”

Doncaster based AmbiSpace, a specialist design and manufacture of inclusive sensory solutions, worked with Yorkshire Rose College to create and install the Sensory Nooks.

Michael Ibbotson, admissions and student experience director, said: “AmbiSpace have been fantastic to work with. They realty understood our student’s needs. This has been the start of a great relationship with them, and they have kindly donated a number of pieces of sensory equipment to our college. We look forward to working with them in the future.”

The pods will also have a significant positive impact on students with SEND by providing an inclusive, low-stimulus environment that meets individual sensory and communication needs. This targeted support promotes independence and enables students to participate more consistently and confidently in educational activities, supporting improved engagement, progression, and outcomes.

Yorkshire Rose College is managed by The Carr Fenton Foundation, a charity supporting children, young people and adults with additional needs. As champions of Deaf education, British Sign Language and specialist SEND provision, the Foundation exists to help everyone reach their potential.
