999 services take part in a special British Sign Language lesson during Sign Language Week
Employees from the ambulance service, fire service and police have joined together to take part in a British Sign Language (BSL) lesson as part of The Carr Fenton Foundation’s Sign Language Week celebrations.
A team from each of the local 999 services learned a number of BSL signs specific to emergencies alongside basic greetings and other useful signs as part of the lesson delivered by the BSL team at the Foundation.
We were so pleased to work with representatives from the emergency services in South Yorkshire and they were brilliant with our pupils and students

They also spent time with pupils from Doncaster School for Deaf Children and students from Yorkshire Rose College to share their learnings.
Hannah Anderson from The Carr Fenton Foundation’s BSL team said: “We were so pleased to work with representatives from the emergency services in South Yorkshire and they were brilliant with our pupils and students and went away having learned some new relevant signs that could help them to support Deaf people in an emergency.
“Sign Language Week is a great time for us to kick start these relationships and we hope to work even more closely with each organisation over the coming months, be that via our free online learning platform, encouraging teams to learn to sign, or attendance at our Deaf Awareness sessions.
“This is a great opportunity for us to work together to make a real difference to our Deaf community.”
